Weird Kid Studios Podcast interviews

Interested in indie game development?

You're in the right spot. We're Weird Kid Studios, creators of Galactic Bar fight on the Oculus Quest

We build games. By ourselves. No big studio, no bosses, very little budget. and so far we have managed to get 10,000 players and counting to play the early version of our game.

When we're not building games, we like to talk about building games. Funny how that works. There are a lot of people out there with a great game idea and we want you to feel inspired to make it real.

Indie development isn't always easy, but it's a s**t ton of fun. If you're interested in some real talk about indie games, check out the interviews below.

Nice Games Club | Programming VR Games

I kind of feel like the undefined spaces of VR, I think that's the most fun part, right? I've got so many projects where it's like, we're going to try this weird thing and I don't know if it's going to happen. I don't know if it's going to work, but let's go for it right? It's cool seeing what works, it's cool seeing what doesn't work. It's cool seeing what's uncomfortable. You kind of realize, with VR games, it's not just about the play experience, there's a physical demand on your player. It's just important to recognize who your audience is, and who you want to play your game.”

VR Verdict

It damages the gameplay. If it's part of the core design, like you have to manually go and repair stuff, it's part of what makes the game whole. I love automation, but you can't just automate away everything because then what the hell is the core of the game? Your game is just like, crafting weapons, and you know I think not everyone's gonna enjoy that, but there are elements of that game that people will enjoy.

Zero to Play

I definitely feel like the strength of VR and AR and all that is the potential to teach and explain concepts in a way that we really couldn't do as visually before. I was always really bad at math, and I'm a programmer so people are always shocked when they hear that. What I struggled with growing up was how abstract math can be. I wish I had a class that could teach me mathematical concepts so I can understand dimensions and size... I just wish there were more visual representations.

I think that games and VR and all that interactive entertainment for educational purposes can be super valuable to really make these concepts real and not just something you read.”

Level Up Financial Planning

“I use Unity, it's like my core development environment. It supports 2D mobile game development, it supports augmented reality development, VR development. They've been recording commercials and mini-films with it. It can do just about anything now.

Because I've worked in Unity, everything has pretty much stayed the same. I still write code pretty much the same as I did when I first started out. A little bit cleaner, more organized for sure. It wasn't much of a transition. Not from a code perspective. VR is difficult because of the human element, there's a whole human being you have to think about. That's different than just a controller or mouse.

I like making stuff. It's another one of those simple goals that I'm really intent about. That is my goal right now at this point in life, I just want to make stuff.”

Galactic Bar Fight Roundtable - Meet the Team

The first device we built games for was the iPhone 3, I think that's where we were. iPhone 3GS or something really old. I think the first iPad had come out. From the beginning, I was working on really reduced hardware, and I think taking that background, the tricks I had to learn from mobile games, a lot of that has applied to Galactic Bar Fight.

I've been pretty happy with how optimized the game is considering how complicated a lot of the stuff we're doing is. I think all of that came from the mobile game background.”
